What is the GPA Calculator & How does it work
The SimplyUtil GPA Calculator is an essential tool for students and parents navigating the German school system. In Germany, academic performance is graded on a scale from 1 (excellent) to 6 (insufficient) – which is the inverse of the American GPA system. A grade point average of 1.0 is the highest possible achievement, while any value above 4.0 is considered a failing grade. Our calculator determines your weighted grade point average based on your individual grades and their respective weighting (credits or number of weekly hours), as required for the Abitur, university applications, and final diplomas.
How does the calculation work? Technically, the algorithm calculates the product of each grade and its weight, sums these values, and then divides that sum by the total weight. The resulting average is displayed with two decimal places. As you enter your subjects and adjust the weights, the JavaScript running in your browser immediately calculates the new average – entirely locally, without any server connection.
The calculation takes place 100% locally on your end device. Your grades remain absolutely private and are never transmitted to the internet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
help_outlineWhich grading system is used?
The calculator uses the German school system with grades ranging from 1 (excellent) to 6 (insufficient). Unlike the American GPA system, a lower number represents a better result in the German system. An average of 1.5 is excellent, while anything above 4.0 is considered a fail.
help_outlineHow is the NC (Numerus Clausus) calculated?
The NC is essentially your final school-leaving grade point average (Abitur). Our tool calculates the weighted average of your subjects. Depending on the federal state and specific degree requirements, advanced courses (Leistungskurse) may be double-weighted. Simply enter the appropriate weight in the "Weighting" field.
